An Anniversary Screening: 5 Years of Lino Kino

BY KRISTAL SOTOMAYOR

In celebration of their five-year anniversary, FringeArts is bringing the DIY spirit of Lino Kino’s beloved site-specific screenings to the Haas Biergarten for a one-night-only evening of film and video art produced by local artists. On Sunday, September 24, 2023 at 7:30 PM, sit back, relax, and enjoy a movie-magic inspired cocktail courtesy of Fringe Bar. Screened at the outdoor beer garden at FringeArts, the film program will be curated from an open call.

“Lino Kino is thrilled to present a wide-ranging selection of new films by Philadelphia-based artists on the final day of this year’s Fringe Festival at FringeArts—a cherished hub for experimental art and performance. The artist-run collective will be celebrating their five-year milestone of engaging the public through their screenings, workshops, and collaborative events, while enthusiastically introducing a range of newcomers to the possibilities of moving-image art,” said a representative from Lino Kino.

Lino Kino is a Philadelphia-based media arts collective dedicated to exploring new approaches to experimental moving image exhibition. The organization is a collaboratively run, DIY media arts collective dedicated to showcasing artists working in a variety of mediums. Since 2018, Lino Kino has curated a multitude of new and oft-overlooked films, video art pieces, and performances with their open-call and 16mm film screenings.

In the summer of 2020, Philadelphia’s Institute of Contemporary Art invited Lino Kino to curate their 21st annual Open Video Call. The collective has also produced and exhibited two seasons of Lino Kino TV—their ad hoc television studio project at AUTOMAT and HOT•BED galleries, where guest artists were invited to prepare live segments for online streaming. They have also engaged in art-making through leading free workshops and presenting large-scale public installations. Learn more about their work from our article, Philadelphia Organization Spotlight: Lino Kino.
